11x14 Questlove, Havana, Cuba 2002
Questlove arriving with The Roots to Havana, Cuba in 2002. This was the first time The Roots played in Cuba and my third time in Cuba, documenting Cuban hip hop for a book that was never released.
The Roots played an incredible show that year, the fans were waiting in droves outside of the venue before the show. There were hundreds of them, faces pressed up against a glass wall separating the inside of the venue from the outside.
The security guards had no idea how to handle this whatsoever. I doubt they had ever seen a crowd of this size. The glass actually started to move in waves as the crowd pushed on it, waiting to be let inside. The security guards were probably afraid that if they had opened the doors the crowd would have rushed in anxiously, causing some sort of riot.
But of course that didn’t happen. People entered politely, one at a time, high giving each other as they entered the venue. It was magical to say the least.
